Later, the sport was banned and the dogs found themselves on the outskirts of the canine world. The breed of English Bulldogs would have declined but for the true breed fanciers who tried to breed out the excessive aggressiveness. The dogs started to be used as companions and are now one of the symbols of the British culture.

The French Bulldog is believed to be a descendent of a Spanish bull-baiting dog. However, this theory is less popular as compared to that which claims the British origin of the breed. It appears that in the 1860's when bulldogs were very popular in Britain some small varieties began to appear. Some of these dogs were imported to France where they were crossed with French terriers. The Kennel Club started to register the dog as Bouledogue Francais in 1905.

The American Bulldog is the descendant of the English Bulldog. Some dogs were brought to America. The American version was a large, fierce dog with longer legs and more speed and agility than the English show dog. John D. Johnson of Summerville, Georgia is reputed as the person who perfected the qualities of the American Bulldog. American Bulldogs were used as a guard and in hunting bear, wild boar, squirrel and raccoon. Nowadays, American Bulldogs are used in hunting, tracking, obedience, and as companion dogs.
