For instance, the French Bulldog is a small sized, compact, short coated, muscular breed with erect bat-like ears. These dogs are said to have a clownish appearance, which is probably due to their short wrinkly face and a short, well-rounded body. They are very alert and curious and like to be the center of attention.

They were originally bred as ratters and companions yet serve mostly as pets nowadays. The average life span for the breed is about 10-12 years. French Bulldogs are prone to some hereditary disorders such as being overweight, which leads to problems with the heart and back. It is important to supply them with adequate exercise and the correct diet. Intervertebral disc disease may sometimes occur in the breed, too.

As for American Bulldogs, they are higher on the leg and swifter than the English counterpart. The breed is very muscular and has a large, mighty head and powerful jaws. They have a wide chest and muscular neck that tapers from shoulders to head.

They can live for about 16 years and may suffer from hip dysplasia. Overall, these are healthy dogs and can be used in hunting, watchdogging, tracking, and weight pulling. And Bulldogs make good companions for the whole family.
